Collecting fine and costume jewelry
January 3rd, 2017
All jewelry has an intrinsic value which makes it a popular item for collectors. It’s small, easy to display, stow or wear, It’s like a treasure hunt!
I’m going to cover two styles and categories of jewelry, let’s start with Fine jewelry. Fine jewelry is made of precious metal and gemstones. Look for quality made pieces, try to collect pieces that are stamped, or have a makers mark. These are referred to as signed pieces. Also look for artistic design, quality, rare and unusual, antique and vintage. Buy pieces that appeal to you.
The second style and category is Costume jewelry. Categories include: bakelite, plastic, faux pearls, rhinestones, colored stones etc. Some collectors look for just cameos, black mourning jewelry, or only clip style earrings, ostentatious brooches etc. There are many possibilities! Buy what you like, finding a signed piece is always a bonus.
