Handiwork Linens

Handiwork textiles, linens, and embroidery work are a beautiful and lost tradition. In earlier times, up until around WWII, ladies kept trousseaus and learned to embroider and do handiwork and other fine sewing. Handiwork was consisered a prized art, and important in the creation of a beautiful home. Women decorated linens with krewel and tatting, crocheted their tablecloths and quilted comforters, and made lacy crocheted handkerchiefs and doilies. (Tatting is a durable style of lace constructed by a series of knots and loops, often done in a variety of colors.) All these lovely textiles were safely kept in a trousseau (or hope chest) until their marriage.Antique trousseaus are hard to find, especially scarcely used ones. HH Antiques recently acquired a 1920s cedar chest filled with trousseau items. The chest contained thirty matching pairs of pillow cases with needlework designs, depicting a variety of flowers in a multitude of colors. The bride never used her trousseau linens and they are in perfect condition, still fragrant with cedar.

The price for each pair of pillowcase linens ranges from $15.00 - $30.00. In addition to these trousseau linens, fine examples of many other handiworks are available at HH Antiques. Stop in to view these rare treasures, or call us for more information: 419-867-1676.
